Kelly Smurthwaite grew up in Hawaii and California and attended college in Colorado and Utah. She did her graduate work at Cornell University and the University of Hartford.
Smurthwaite is an art teacher at Duffy School in West Hartford. She loves watching children discover the visual and tactile world. She has translated that same feeling to her heart design. "We warm our hearts with the fruit of the vine. This design represents the luscious grapes we grow in Connecticut; in fall, during the harvest, the leaves turn from green to gold before the vines go to sleep for the winter. That is the cycle of all life."
For Smurthwaite, painting is visual problem solving, as she is challenged by her surroundings to depict them with lights and darks. Lately, much of her work has been for charity including breast cancer, the West Hartford Symphony and New Hartford "Dog Daze". She is physically active, too, playing soccer in a Women's League, kayaking, riding her motorcycle, and keeping up with her three children.
